Solidarity with Incarcerated Survivors

October 24, 2022 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Letter Writing Night to Incarcerated Survivors + Solidarity with Incarcerated Survivors Book Club

Our monthly letter-writing events provide participants with the opportunity to write letters of support to incarcerated survivors of domestic abuse, sexual violence, and human trafficking. We alternate months where we write to survivors in Indiana and write to survivors who have national campaigns through Survived and Punished. Participants can also write a loved one or hear and select a survivor’s story. All ages are welcome, and participants can join in person or online. In all cases, we will only disclose parts of cases that survivors feel comfortable with. Letter writing nights are free and open to all.

Folks who have been attending Letter writing night want to know more about mass incarceration in relationship to survivorship, and this fall we decided to read together and have a short discussion about what we’re reading after letter writing. We have copies of “Becoming Mrs. Burton” to share and will hand these out at the September meeting. We will read sections of the book together and discuss it at the Oct-Dec.

Next year's readings will be decided by the group from: https://humanrights.uchicago.edu/events/changing-the-things-we-cannot-accept-black-women-s-vision-and-leadership-in-prison-organizing-and-abolition-movements

Jail- Based Workshops with Incarcerated Survivors.

We are providing prevention programming that mirrors our Values to Practice, mediation, De-escalation, and Accountability, and Building Healthy Relationships programs on the outside. These workshops will be facilitated in the Monroe County Jail on Alternating Saturday afternoons. If you are interested in participating in these workshops alongside people who are incarcerated in the women's blocks please contact prevention@middlewayhouse.org for information on training and orientation. Participants must be 18+ and pass a background check initiated by the Monroe County Jail to attend programming in the jail.
